Vibrant Communities Calgary believes all Calgarians have a right to full participation in the family, social, economic and political life of their communities, and recognizes that poverty limits this full participation.

  Fair Fares
Fair Fares, an action team of Vibrant Communities Calgary, was formed in late 2000 to address the affordable transportation needs of people living on low incomes. Many of our low-income citizens cannot fully participate in the social, economic and family life of their communities because they cannot afford the transportation.

The principle barrier to community inclusion is a lack of affordable transportation

Fair Fares is a community committee composed of people living on low-incomes, concerned citizens, non-profit agencies and representatives from business and The City of Calgary.

“A Low Income Transit Pass allows me to leave my home and access the city for my employment, doctor appointments, community activity, personal needs, groceries, other shopping, visits with my children and personal contact with my relatives. To be independent on transportation keeps my moral up to achieve things by handling them myself and keeps me sane. Thanks.”
- Calgarian living on low income

Calgary Transit and Vibrant Communities Calgary surveyed passholders to assess benefits and outcomes of the Pass. Almost all respondents stated that the Pass was useful (99%) and their lives were better when they had the Pass (97%). Read the report

FAIR FARES RECOGNIZED FOR COMMUNITY COLLABORATION AND COMMITMENT IN AREA OF SOCIAL ACTION

The VCC Fair Fares Action Team is honoured to be this year's recipient of two very special awards.

In June 2006, Fair Fares received the 2006 Community Spirit of Collaboration Award from the Developmental Disabilities Resource Centre of Calgary. This award highlights the way in which organizations can come together to create approaches to community development and inclusion that none could have accomplished alone.

In November 2006, Fair Fares received the 2006 Maureen Allen Social Action Award from the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Alberta Division. This award is presented to an individual or organization who has demonstrated outstanding commitment and/or achievement in the area of social action.

Congratulations Fair Fares!
